After the match, Ondrej Perusic announced the end of his career. We wish him all the best.

Here is what Ehlers / Wickler said after the win:

Wickler:

It was another impressive match. David Schweiner, whom we wanted to put under pressure, handled it very well – just like Nils did on our side. It was really a head-to-head battle, but we managed to get the crucial breaks. Then they served at me, where I made some mistakes, but we still won the point in that break. I’m happy that I stayed calm in that situation and kept playing my game. In the end, we turned a 16:16 into a 20:17. We were able to reward ourselves for a really solid team performance. Our communication was very, very strong. We made a lot of adjustments because CZE kept adapting their game too – all coordinated with our coach. I’m happy that we’re in the semifinals.

Ehlers:
Danke an unser ganzes Team.

We gave everything and are super happy. It was another very, very close match. It was at a very high level, a side-to-side battle, back and forth the whole time. I’m even prouder that we stayed calm and stuck together as a team, especially in the second set where CZE tried everything again. They started serving at Clemens, and we then served at Perusic – so everything was in the mix, tactically very high-level from both teams. But we kept pushing and stayed on the gas the whole time. Now we have two more matches, and I’m happy that we get to play until the end. Tomorrow we face the Olympic champions – our statistics against them aren’t great, but we’re in really good shape right now and will give everything we have. Thanks to our whole team. Especially at the end of this season, playing like this again, after we were more or less down at the beginning of the season. And thanks to our coach, who stayed home due to an injury but has still been supporting us strongly from there.

On the women’s side, defending champion Kelly Claes lost with her new partner Molly Shaw against Graudina / Samoilova (LAT) and will now play the semifinals vs. Thâmela Coradello and Victoria Lopes. Carol / Rebecca (BRA) won against Humana-Paredes / Wilkerson (CAN) and will face Brasher / Nuss (USA), who won against Donlin / Denaburg (USA), in the semis.

More Quotes:

Ehlers / Wickler won against Mol / Sorum and will now play the defending World Champions Perusic / Schweiner (CZE) at 10:30 a.m. German time. Here’s what the German team said after the game:

Ehlers: Great win in a hard fight like we had with this team in the semifinals at the Olympics. Proud of us that we made it through the hard parts of the game, e.g. in the 1st set or in the 3rd, where they came back after a 5:0 lead, or when we already had 14:11 and they came back again. This made it even greater that we won. Tomorrow we already play the next game against CZE, so just celebrate for a second and then recharge and focus on the new game.

Wickler: Hard fight, at least in the 1st set, where they almost ran over us and made us play their game. In the 2nd set we improved and were tested more under pressure, improved our service and our block, and fought for every ball. In the 3rd we started 5:0 but then they came close again. We lost a few breaks but stayed calm. Then it was a great game. At 14:12 I thought a bit too much and worried about myself, missed another sideout, but then stayed calm, that was important and then we made the win. So I am super happy to win it and win against this number-one-seeded team and look forward to tomorrow’s game.

Beside this the other GER Team Pfretzschner / Winter (GER) won also against NOR, they now play Rotar / Gauthier-Rat (FRA). Olympic Champs now face Evenadro /Arthur (BRA) and Schalk / Shaw (USA) won ag. CUB and are the last USA-Team in the men´s Tournament. They now play Nilsson / Andersson (SWE)

At the womens Tournament, 3hree USA teams are in the quarterfinals, and two of them will play against each other in the matchup: Brasher / Nuss (USA) vs. Donlin / Denaburg (USA). Thamela / Victoria (BRA) will play Gottardi / Orsi Toth (ITA), and Graudiņa / Samoilova (LAT) will face Shaw / Cheng (USA).

Duda and Ana Patrícia forfeited their game against the USA, but there is no official reason for what happened. The statements from the federation leave room for speculation. The coaching staff said that they would not play due to medical reasons and that they want to run more tests back in Brazil, but this does not say what happened or to whom.

Mens:

Chaim Schalk after their 2nd pool play match: “In the first match we were a little sloppy finding our rhythm. I’m happy we were able to dial things in for our second match vs NED. Benesh and Partain avoid elimination and move forward in Adelaide: With one victory and two losses, the Americans progressed as the third-best team in Pool H and now need to wait until the end of pool play to figure out if they will make it directly to the Round of 32 or if they will need to play in the 'lucky losers' round.

Mol and Sørum are the first pool winners in Australia, ater 3 wins.

Defending champions Perušič and Schweiner also won all games and made it out of the pool as pool winners.
